Failure to launch is a failure to leave the childhood home, either from inadequate preparation or desire, and embark on a journey of independent life. Failure to launch syndrome is an informal terminology for a common issue witnessed among some young adults.
There is high likelihood that young adults suffering from failure to launch syndrome will show these characteristics: poor or no visions for long-term or future goals, narcissism, lack of fundamental cleaning and cooking skills, low levels of motivation, inability to take responsibility when required to, hardly persistent, unable to tolerate distress, high expectations of those surrounding them without reciprocating, and lack of skills vital for transformation into adulthood.
Various reasons account for the inability of young adults to launch and cannot be attributed to a single factor. Some of the reasons include: parents being overprotective or overbearing, tough economic times, high anxiety, depression, laziness, addiction to drugs and/or alcohol, and an unsuccessful or failing run at school or college.
